The Schwarzman Scholars programme is one of the world’s most selective and prestigious scholarships, bringing up to 200 exceptional young leaders to Beijing each year for a fully funded one-year master’s degree at Tsinghua University — often called China’s MIT or Harvard.
Created by Blackstone founder Stephen Schwarzman with a 75 million endowment, this programme is designed to build a global network of leaders who understand China’s role in global affairs. It’s modelled on the Rhodes Scholarship but with a 21st century focus on geopolitics, technology, and cross-cultural leadership.

Eligibility — Open to Everyone
Schwarzman Scholars is genuinely open to all nationalities worldwide. There are no country restrictions. The core requirements:
- Age 18-28 as of 1 August 2027 (born between August 1998 and August 2009)
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (any field — business, engineering, humanities, sciences, all accepted)
- English proficiency: if your undergraduate instruction wasn’t in English, you need proof like IELTS (minimum 7.0), TOEFL (minimum 100), or Cambridge Advanced (minimum 185)
- Demonstrated leadership potential — through community projects, student organisations, work achievements, or entrepreneurial ventures

The Application
The Schwarzman application requires:
- Online application form with personal and academic details
- Three essays (leadership, personal statement, and current affairs)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
- Video introduction (recommended but not required — share your personality)
- Resume/CV (up to 2 pages)
What Sets Successful Applicants Apart
Schwarzman looks for three qualities: leadership potential, intellectual ability, and character. The selection committee wants to see:
- Evidence you’ve led something — a project, a team, a movement, a startup. The scale matters less than your initiative and impact.
- Genuine curiosity about China and global affairs, not just a desire for a prestigious credential
- Ability to engage with people from radically different backgrounds
- A track record of academic excellence — no specific GPA requirement, but admitted scholars typically graduate in the top of their class
