Who can apply
Chevening states that applicants must meet all relevant eligibility criteria. Core requirements include:
- citizenship of a Chevening-eligible country or territory;
- where applicable, residence in an ODA-eligible country and a clear intention to support the country of award;
- commitment to return to the country of award for at least two years after the scholarship;
- at least two years of post-undergraduate work experience, equivalent to 2,800 hours;
- an undergraduate degree that qualifies the applicant for a UK master's programme, completed at least two years before the application deadline; applicants need their certificate by the interview; and
- applications to three different eligible UK university courses.
Applicants must have at least one unconditional offer from their eligible course choices by the deadline in the official timeline if they are successful at interview.
Chevening also publishes exclusions. For example, British or dual British citizens are generally not eligible, and applicants who are resident in the UK at the time of application are not eligible, subject to the published rules. Read the official eligibility page before applying.
What the scholarship covers
Chevening's published award coverage includes:
- payment of tuition fees;
- approved-route economy travel to and from the scholar's country of residence;
- an arrival allowance and departure allowance;
- the cost of one entry-clearance visa application;
- a contribution of up to £75 for TB testing where required;
- a travel top-up allowance; and
- a monthly living allowance for accommodation and living expenses.
The monthly living allowance depends on whether the scholar studies in or outside London and is subject to annual review. Check the official coverage page for the current terms.
Application timeline for 2027–28
- 4 August 2026, 11:00 UTC: applications open.
- 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC: applications close.
- Mid-October 2026 to January 2027: eligible applications are assessed.
- From mid-February 2027: shortlisted candidates are invited to interview.
- March to April 2027: interviews take place.
- From mid-June 2027: results are announced.
- 8 July 2027, 17:00 BST: deadline to submit at least one unconditional UK university offer for successful interview candidates.
- September/October 2027: 2027–28 scholars begin study in the UK.
